How NOT to do Counterinsurgency

Posted by Chris at 5/19/2007 7:15 PM...

If the United States is serious about fighting the insurgency in Iraq, this behavior has to stop. While there may be military or safety reasons for destroying a building, even a mosque, laughing and joking about it (and then posting the video on the Internet) is beyond the pale. It speaks of a lack of respect for Iraqis that says to me that we are at the same point of no return in Iraq that we were in post-Tet 1968 when the U.S. Army finally began serious counter-insurgency operations. The mission to win hearts and minds may be as impossible in Iraq now as it was after 6 years of indiscriminate bombardment and search and destroy missions in Vietnam.

Hat tip to Chris Bray.
